Training and Education

The Department of Employment Services (DOES) helps to develop Washington’s workforce through training and education.  Countless of opportunities are available for District residents to learn, or sharpen their skills within, a trade. For more information on job training opportunities, call or visit one of the DC Works! Career Centers.

Career Technical Education (CTE)

The District of Columbia Department of Employment Services (DOES) works in partnership with The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education to ensure that District residents, 18 and older, can learn skills and earn the certifications necessary to excel in high growth industries.  DOES’ Career Technical Education (CTE) programs provide free job training and skill development to District residents.  Classes are held in the evening and are free to all District residents.

TRAINING PROGRAMS

Hospitality Program

The Hospitality Career Technical Education Program, currently offered at Roosevelt Senior High School, provides District residents with an opportunity to gain practical work experience in hotels and other hospitality businesses.

During the nine week training program, participants learn about the high-growth hospitality industry through shadowing, guest speakers, and hotel visits. Resume writing seminars and interview skills workshops are also offered. Upon successful completion of the program, participants earn an industry-recognized certification and complete a 90-day externship in the hospitality industry.

Carpentry Program

The Pre Apprentice Carpentry Program, currently being offered at Phelps Senior High School, provides District residents with the basic skills needed to enter into, and successfully complete, an apprenticeship program for the trade.  The pre-apprenticeship program, which also offers job readiness training and math enrichment, is free to all District residents, 18 years and older, with a high school diploma or GED certificate.

For information on how to apply and to determine eligibility, call 202.671.2100 or visit a DC Works! Career Centers.
